Following in the footsteps of the ground-breaking Wolfenstein 3D, Doom revolutionized the first-person shooter. Id created an ambiance with the game that's downright creepy, thanks to detailed surfaces, great lighting effects, and intelligent use of stereo sound. Doom was also the first shooter to fully embrace network play, much to the annoyance of corporate IS directors the world over.
