MicroProse spent MILLIONS of dollars to develop Darklands as its entree into the adventure gaming market. This game is a stunningly lifelike recreation of medieval Germany, complete with guilds, witches, and evil warlords. Unfortunately, the 1992 release was plagued with bugs, and the game got panned by a lot of critics. From a time investment standpoint, this game is definitely LONG, and there are bugs in the user interface that cause system crashes at some of the most inopportune times (almost as if the game KNOWS how long it's been since you've saved...) However, the game is addictive, and it's easy enough to keep track of the main plot and maintain a sense of progress. I actually completed this game, destroying the dark temple and becoming ridiculously famous.
